Seymour Lipton: Drawing Modernism
Samek Art Gallery, Bucknell University, April 15 – May 3, 2011
This exhibition “Seymour Lipton: Drawing Modernism” derived from research on the Samek Art Gallery’s collection of thirty four sculptural drawings by Seymour Lipton. Lipton was a twentieth-century American artist working in a new medium and surrounded by the avant-garde American and European Modernists of New York City. Not only was Lipton a unique figure situated ideally at the heart of Modernism in New York while working in and exemplifying ideas and influences from earlier European Modern artists, but his sculptural drawings present an additional learning opportunity to see deeper within the artist’s creative process and to examine his aesthetic sensibilities.
